Macular degeneration treatment

There is no cure for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) but it can be slowed down if it is caught early. That means you need to come for a eye examination at least once a year so Dr. Thomas Eshun-Wilson can stay current on how your eyes are doing and provide you with treatment options in a timely fashion.

Medications for Wet AMD

For Wet AMD, Thomas can use the drugs Avastin™ or Eylea™. They work by blocking a protein called VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor). Blocking VEGF helps to prevent further growth of abnormal blood vessels.

Use of Avastin™ or Eylea™ injections may not give you back all the lost vision but it can help preserve the vision you still have, with a good chance of some significant improvement. Thomas first numbs your eye and then injects the medication into the vitreous. You would probably need Avastin or Eylea injections every four weeks for the initial phase and then less frequently.

Treatments for Dry AMD

When Dry AMD has reached the advanced stage, there is no way vision loss can be reversed. But in the second (Intermediate) stage, research has suggested that certain vitamin and mineral supplements can slow the disease’s progress.

If you are at high risk for developing Advanced AMD, it could be well worth taking these supplements. You would be at high risk if you have Intermediate AMD in one or both eyes, or if you have Advanced AMD in one eye. Thomas can discAMD-all-inclusiveuss this with you based on what stage he finds your AMD to have reached.

Researchers have estimated that these supplements can reduce the progression of Intermediate Dry AMD by about 25%. The supplements are:

  • Zinc (as zinc oxide) 80 mg
  • Vitamin C 500 mg
  • Vitamin E 400 IU
  • Copper (as cupric oxide) 2 mg
  • Lutein 10 mg
  • Zeaxanthin 2 mg

While this is not a macular degeneration treatment, some studies have suggested that a diet high in green leafy vegetables may reduce your risk of developing AMD to start with.

Monitoring Your Own Vision

If you have Dry AMD, be aware that it can turn into Wet AMD at any time. To help Thomas catch that early, you can check your own vision from time to time using an Amsler grid.

Eyesight is precious and adapting to a lifestyle without reasonably good eyesight can be difficult. Thomas can help you best if he can catch developments before they advance very far. Your macular degeneration treatments will be more effective in saving your eyesight if they are performed early rather than late. This is why it is imperative that if you find any change in your Amsler grid monitoring at home you contact us early.
